On Wednesday, 17th September we are pleased to welcome all participants
to an official reception of the mayor of Graz in the
The reception will start at 19:00. Please don't forget to bring your invitation!
In 1550, the so-called ``Kanzeley'' located in the former ghetto in what is now Frauengasse became too small. Thus a new location for the city's administration was sought. The main square, on which merchants sold their goods, was chosen. On the main square there was also a pillory and it was the place of execution. The first city hall on this spot was a rather small building in Renaissance style. It was only about half the size of today's city hall.
Because of the continuous growth of the city, administrative work
increased and the need for a larger building emerged. In 1806 it was
decided to make several reconstructions and extensions that created a
completely new city hall.
In the time from 1888 to 1893 some new extensions became necessary, which in connection with some new reconstructions created a building in the style of the period of promoterism that lasts until today. The building was once decorated with numerous statues. In 1966, during restoration, these statues were removed, which was regretted by many citizens of Graz. During this restoration the facade was changed so that it fit in with the other old houses around the main square.
